The city of Bujumbura was transformed into a vibrant stage for Burundian culture as thousands gathered for the latest edition of the UMUKOZO Festival, one of the country’s leading celebrations of traditional heritage.

This year’s festival was held under the theme “Our Identity is Culture,” highlighting the importance of preserving Burundi’s customs, music, and artistic traditions for future generations.

One of the biggest highlights of the event was the inaugural Drum Carnival, which saw iconic Burundian drummers parade through the capital’s streets in a spectacular display of rhythm, dance, and ceremonial performance. Their synchronized performances captivated residents and visitors alike, creating an unforgettable celebration of one of Africa’s most recognizable musical traditions.

Along Boulevard de l’Uprona, performers paused at several locations to present energetic drum routines, receiving enthusiastic applause from the crowds that lined the streets throughout the day.

For many attendees, the festival represented more than entertainment. It also served as a reminder of Burundi’s unity and stability.

“I am very happy to hear the sound of the Burundian drum while seeing our national flag flying,” said festival attendee Pascal Niyonkuru. “It shows that our country is living in peace and security.”

In addition to the famous royal drumming performances, the festival featured a variety of traditional and modern dance presentations, showcasing the cultural diversity found across Burundi’s different regions.

According to Jean Claude Niyuhire, Director of the UMUKOZO Festival, the Burundian drum continues to be the nation’s most powerful cultural symbol. He emphasized that this centuries-old tradition has been recognized by UNESCO as part of the world’s Intangible Cultural Heritage, underscoring its global cultural significance.

Organized every year since 2021 by the AMAGABA Cultural Club, the UMUKOZO Festival has become an important platform for bringing together cultural groups from across Burundi. Beyond entertainment, the event aims to preserve traditional knowledge, strengthen national identity, and introduce younger generations to the country’s rich artistic legacy.

As the festival continues to grow, UMUKOZO is reinforcing Burundi’s reputation as a nation deeply committed to safeguarding its cultural heritage while sharing its unique traditions with audiences at home and around the world.
